Erich Karle had amassed a chip lead so large that the rest of the table took to calling it “The Berlin Wall” in honor of Karle’s German descent. With a Karle victory looking all but inevitable and the other players all nursing fairly similar stacks, Karle was named champion and awarded the first place money while the remaining four players chopped up the rest of the prize pool.
